The black and white documentary photographs include candid images
of well known women leaders and inspirational figures of the Civil
Rights Movement, politics and community action. The exhibit includes
photos of Coretta Scott King, Alberta Williams King, Rosa Parks,
Rosealynn Carter, Grace Towns Hamilton, Dorothy Cotton, Jean Young,
Eliza Paschall, Geneva Haugabrooks, Johnnie Carr, Virginia Durr,
Ethel Mae Matthews, Dorothy Bolden, Xernona Clayton, Georgeanna
Sinkfield and others.
Lewis, currently a middle school English teacher in Los Angeles,
took the photographs as a freelancer and writer for black-owned
newspapers in Atlanta during the 1970s. "Without the contributions
of these women, Atlanta and the movement would
have been tremendously diminished," says Lewis. "They
didn't simply back up the guys. Their contributions were equal
to and in some instances greater than the men who got all the
publicity."
The photographs show black and white women, of all ages, engaged
in the passionate commerce of ideas that flowered in Atlanta following
the assassination of Dr. King. "These pictures come from
the 1970s," Lewis said. "This was a decade I call the
time of the DreamWind, when Dr. King's dreaming and activism continued
to blow through the city the way the wind continues in a train
station long after the train has passed. All of us felt it. And
these women acted on it." The photographs are part of an
illustrated memoir Lewis has written titled "White Boy with
the Black Press: race and journalism in Martin Luther King's
hometown."
