Michael West
As an artist, I am drawn to beauty, mystery, darkness and solitude.
These aspects of life reflect upon my inner experience of the
world we live in. I feel a yearning for a state of mysterious
beauty and grace that is often absent in our day-to-day life.
This search for beauty and grace manifests itself through my choice
of subjects. I use dark, rich tones and colors in my prints. There
are subtle references to historical photographic processes in
my approach to image making. My manipulation of the image creates
a shadowy and ambiguous setting that isolates my subject matter—a
timeless realm, evoking a place where the subject’s presence
transcends the here and now.
By expressing my experiences through my work, my desire is to
create images alluding to an imagined world of beauty, solitude,
mystery and darkness. I am inviting the viewer to experience their
own feelings and memories through my photographs.
