James McLaughlin Way

At the age of nine, Way began attending the Atlanta College of Art, and at twelve, North Carolina’s Brevard College. At nineteen, Way was selected for advanced studies in illustration at Atlanta’s Portfolio Center, after which, he began his professional career as an illustrator, working with leading advertising agencies and clients such as the Coca-Cola Company, Major League Baseball, CNN, Sports Illustrated, AT&T, the Marine Corps, and others. In addition to his formal training in art, he has gained significant practical knowledge and experience from the close mentor relationships he has developed with working artists. Throughout his career, his work has been published in numerous magazines and books, and in 1999, he received both a Clio and a Gold Mobius Award at the International Film Festival. His work has also won Addy Awards in several districts as well as a Gold Gamma Award.

Despite being acclaimed as an illustrator, his passion is painting. Way paints large-scale, breathtaking ‘cloudscapes’ and studies of the human form that demonstrate an extraordinary ability to capture movement, strength and the sensual shape. Way describes his painting process as being “almost primal”. To capture the desired movement in his paintings, he often paints wildly to music, and many times the process leaves him covered with paint head to toe.
