Larry Walker
The paintings selected for this presentation extend from my interests
in and my reactions to the various ways individuals in our society
interface, connect or disconnect with fellow humans across disciplines
and cultural lines. My ongoing involvement with compositional
order, interior/exterior formats, color and surface textures contributes
significantly to the development of these works along with my
perceptual and observational experiences.
For the past several years the Wall Series, characterized by surfaces
with peeling posters and eroding paint, graffiti markings and
other communicative remnants, has provided me with opportunities
to pursue painting not only as a frontal space (with cultural/psychological
overtones) but also as a time-sensitive vehicle for communicating
with others. To paraphrase Peter Baldaia, Chief Curator of the
Huntsville Museum of Art, ‘Frequently, the mélange
of imagery, text and paint applications in Walker’s work
provide differing points of view or expectations as well as diverse
cultural perspectives that transform the detritus of the urban
landscape into an arena for contemplation and discovery.
