Jeff Surace
Born in Media Pa. and growing up in Marietta Ga. I always saw
myself as an artist. With the help from my high school art teacher
Mrs. Garrett, I was able to receive a scholarship to the Savannah
College of Art and Design. After I graduated in 93’, I started
my professional art career as an architectural renderer and freelance
illustrator. Around 97’, I began painting for one of the
leading publishers of fine art in the U.S.. This partnership paved
the way to a discipline and critical thinking process that helped
develop me into creating in my own terms. Last year, I started
painting for myself and immediately began this series.
The Appalachian landscape provides limited perspectives that challenges
me more than any other subject I’ve explored. I find it
to be the beginning for artistically defining myself with oils.
The process I found for these pieces directly reflect the subject
I paint. Meaning, the Appalachian landscape inspired me to develop
my technique. The reason I fragment an image, why it’s flat,
and using a black background are all inspired from this terrain.
I try to create most of this work on-site either by hiking and/or
biking to the locations and working directly on the ground. I’m
constantly dialing-in my equipment to keep me light, and frequently
visit the same places over and over. I guess in the end the thing
I seek is drama from an area where I never saw it before. As I
finish each piece you can view it on my blog at artshowatl.blogspot.com.
