OLIVER SMITH
I was born in Savannah, Georgia and received my art education
in Florida and Georgia schools. The bulk of my creative career
was spent as a graphic designer but I left this field to pursue
a deep-seated passion for the fine arts. Painting, printmaking
and film/video are mediums I have actively pursued since earning
my MFA two years ago. I also teach printmaking as a part-time
instructor at Georgia State University.
Growing up in a city where history and architecture are tightly
woven exerted a tremendous influence on my work. The architectural
forms of older structures are a particular fascination. Battered
walls, peeling layers of paint, blocked in doors and windows portray
the passage and ravages of time. While serving as a metaphor for
the body, architecture also reveals the human desire for permanence
and order. Textures created by carving and scratching the surfaces
of my paintings grow from my printmaking background. The spare
forms and imagery reflect the economy of means required for strong
design. The use of dark monochromatic color schemes is derived
from cinematic influences. My hope is to produce work that engages
the viewer in a wordless dialog with time, memory and form.
