Phil Ralston
Philip Ralston was born in 1953 in Pomona, California, where he
lived surrounded on all sides by infinite orange groves, the playgrounds
and battlefields of his sister, brothers and friends. As the groves
disappeared and his older brothers went off to seminary, Phil
found himself vying with fellow Schwinn Wasp rider Tom Waits for
the primo Progress-Bulletin route, #104. Phil got the route, and
Waits left town around that time. Phil delivered the Prog for
several years, and taught the trade to his younger brother Dave,
who went on to create the widely popular videogame Paperboy. Phil
always went to Catholic schools and spent hundreds and hundreds
of hours at the altar, many of which were logged officially as
he pursued, and achieved, the Ad Altare Dei medal, BSA Troop 104,
Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He always drew pictures, played guitar
and picked up piano in his teens (Leon Russell and Buffalo Springfield
stuff), and took drawing, watercolor, and graphic design (and
English lit) at Loyola-Marymount. His strongest and kindest encouragement
came not from teachers but from friends. He played keyboards in
a band called Pork Pie Hat (covering Dead, J Geils, Allman Brothers,
The Band, and plenty of blues), who appeared in the film Swingin'
Cheerleaders. Strictly personal matters aside, Music remains Phil's
favorite thing in the world.
