Jesus Perez
Perez was born in Venezuela in 1960. In his early youth, he attended
the Julio Arraga and the Neptali Rincon Schools of Fine Arts;
he later obtained a bachelors degree at the Cecilio Acosta University
in Maracaibo, his hometown. Currently, he is a Professor of Painting
and Drawing at Julio Arraga Fine Arts School and at Zulia State
University. His work has traveled Latin America and Europe and
has just recently begun to be shown in the United States. His
paintings belong to many private and institutional collections
internationally.
Perez doesn’t belong to one tradition, but to many. He enriches
his pictorial language from many sources, which he reinterprets
in his own very personal way. Dense and wrought with metaphorical
associations, Perez paintings convey an incredible universe of
mystery and discovery. Working like an action painter, Perez blends
figures and abstract forms into an extraordinarily cohesive composition
in a completely improvisational manner. Instinct and accidental
forms are the key elements of his process, but it is the conscious
knowledge of his expertise that ultimately guides the process
to a masterful finished piece.
His works raise more questions than answers, but that is precisely
his point: to awaken the eye and the mind. This voyage of personal
discovery is most rewarding for the viewer. It is hard to synthesize
in a few words the meaningful ensemble of Perez’s forms
and colors, but essentially his oeuvre reflects an intense concern
about the human condition and the deepest inquiries into the temporality
of his existence
