Mary Anne Mitchell
We’ve all experienced it. You’re driving in your car,
watching the road in front of you. Then you glance in your rearview
to check the traffic behind you, or maybe you adjust the mirror
because you just want to see what’s going on in the back
seat. But what you catch in the rearview makes you catch your
breath. It is something startling and unexpected, sometimes voyeuristic
— a dramatic play of light and shadow receding on the pavement
behind you, or your passengers behaving in a way you aren’t
normally privy to. If you longed to capture that fleeting moment,
then you’ll understand what the photographs in Mary Anne
Mitchell’s current installation, “Reflecting Back,”
are about.
Mitchell is that rare Atlanta native. She was born here and has
spent most of her life here. In addition to being a long-time
fine art photographer, she has worked in commercial photography
in the Atlanta area for more than 20 years. She is currently represented
by Mason Murer Fine Art in Atlanta and Wells Gallery in South
Carolina, and has appeared at City Gallery East and the Atlanta
Contemporary Art Center, among other galleries.
