Jill Schultz McGannon
Jill Schultz McGannon was born in Miami, Florida, and raised in
Atlanta, Georgia. She lived in Athens, Georgia for seven years
where she earned her BFA and MFA in Drawing and Painting at the
University of Georgia. McGannon then attended The School of the
Art Institute of Chicago before returning to Atlanta in 1997.
Her work has been seen in Atlanta at The Modern Primitive Gallery,
D. Miles Gallery, and D.A. Willis Studios. In Chicago, she has
shown at Lorenzo Rodriquez, Deson-Saunders, Eva Cohen, The Lineage
Gallery Project, World Tattoo, Gwenda Jay/Addington Gallery and
others.
Ms. McGannon's most recent body of work consists of landscape
and still-life paintings. She began painting landscapes in the
summer of 1994 when she spent the summer in Cortona, Italy as
an Artist-in-Residence for the University of Georgia's painting
program. She found a new interest in painting plein-air from the
hilltops surrounding Cortona. Upon returning to Georgia in 1997,
her interest in the landscape of her home state-from the North
Georgia Mountains to the palmettos and live oaks of Cumberland
Island-was renewed. With these paintings, she not only affords
herself time spent in nature, but also hopes to impress upon the
viewer the beauty and value of the diminishing landscape. As a
classical painter, Ms. McGannon also works with the human figure
and paints portraits, as well as metaphorical figurative works.
