Patrick Johnson
Patrick Johnson is a self taught artist who has
been exhibiting in Atlanta since 2003. Born and raised in rural
Alabama, Patrick relocated to Atlanta in 1994 and draws mostly
from his childhood experiences as recalled from his dreams.
ARTIST STATEMENT
His work can best be described and understood as “situational
storytelling”. Every work is based upon an actual event
that occurred in his past as remembered today. Each work begins
with a pencil sketch from a remembered or actual dream and evolves
into an articulated, carved, scratched, and cut into the wood
panel that serves as the base. The depiction of these scenes on
panel describe events from various perspectives simultaneously.
He approaches the painting process with respect for the “dream
state” in which the initial scene was conceived by painting
primarily in a sleep deprived state. It is in this state of body
and mind that he believes the relationship to dream is closest.
