William Anderson
Photographer William Anderson is an accomplished
artist in an assortment of mediums including drawing, painting,
printing, and sculpture. However, it is his photography which
is most widely recognized, praised, and increasingly collected.
Born in Selma, Alabama during the great depression, Anderson's
father was a doctor and his mother, a nurse. His parents instilled
in him a respect for education and hard work, encouraging him
to pursue music and art. In 1959, Anderson graduated from Alabama
State University with a B.A. in music. He received his B.F.A.
in 1962 from the University of Wisconsin and his M.F.A in 1968
from the Instituto Allende in San Miguel, Mexico.
Over the past four decades Anderson’s photography has won
awards, been exhibited, and acquired for public and private collections.
Capturing images of the Civil Rights Movement as well as rural
life in the Deep South, Anderson’s documentary style has
been compared to that of Walker Evans, and his painterly compositions
reflect his abiding eye for the dignity of his subjects and the
painterly qualities of Rembrandt and others whom the photographer
admires.
Anderson’s work is increasingly collected by America’s
most prestigious institutions. His photographs are included in
the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington,
D.C., Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartsford, Connecticut,
the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut, and
the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.
Mr. Anderson retired from the faculty of Morehouse College in
Atlanta in June, 2007 where he was a professor of art and chair
to the art department. He currently pursues his art-making and
photography full-time.
